  • The Glorious Quran
    "It is He Who sent down to thee (step by step), in truth, the Book, confirming what went before it; and He sent down the Law (of Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) before this, as a guide to mankind, and He sent down the criterion (of judgment between right and wrong)." (Quran 3:3) "Those who reject the Message when it comes to them (are not hidden from Us). And indeed it is a Book of exalted power. No falsehood can approach it from before or behind it: It is sent down by One Full of Wisdom, Worthy of all Praise."   • Prophetic Tradition
    كان الإمام مالك يقول: كل كلام فيه مقبول و مردود إلا كلام صاحب هذا القبر
    "And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, leave it." (Quran 59:7) The Sunna of the Holy Prophet Sidna Mohammed (peace and blessing be upon him) refers to his traditions and actions, including specific words, actions, and practices. This is in contrast to the hadith, which contains just his words. However, the two doctrines were closely related in the beginnings of Islam. The Sunna is significant to the spirituality of Islam because it continues teaching Muslims how their Prophet acted during his life, and this allows the continuing generations of Muslims to be able to know his ways.

    The Ash‘arites are the largest Sunni theological school, and are named after the school's founder, Imam Abul Hassan al-Ash‘ari (259/873–323/935). The Ash‘arites adhere to the principles of Ahl al-Sunna wal-Jama‘a, although despite their opposition they defend the necessity of using rational argumentation, and aim to refute the opposing views of other religions and philosophical schools in a rational dialectical method.
